Amberley Stone
Amberley Stone is a sculptural stone carver currently based in Somerset. Amberley began sculpting during her time at University studying Fine Art at Falmouth, Cornwall in 2017. She first started practicing with local Cornish granite, that she sourced from the local quarry where she co-founded a collective known as Quarry House Collective. Since then this use of material is what is used most along with limestone and her local stone, hamstone.
Amberley is deeply inspired with architecture contrasted with the natural environment. She explores the diverse perceptions of the natural forms, the tactility within them, the history; with hope to see the vision of this story in the stone.
Her curiosity of the historical culture with human behaviour as well as the environment plays a huge part in her work, especially the Archaic - Greek Classical period and the Prehistoric Age. Amberley focuses on only using hand carving tools to achieve her desired textures, highlighting the importance to converse with the material and understand it’s characteristics. Honouring the beauty of the natural curves of each material is what sets the intention at the beginning of each sculpture, allowing the stone to dominate, not the tools.
In 2023, Amberley worked in Italy with an artist just south of Florence in Tuscany, where she had the opportunity to carve the local mountain stone, granite from Elba Island and also marble from Carrara.
