Jane Cairns

Biography

Jane’s studio is based on the banks of the Thames, where her work begins with recognising a quiet beauty in the ordinary. She draws on the visual language of functional objects and the store of material references that surround us, translating what she notices into sculptural forms.

Her pieces are hand-built from press-moulded elements, joined to create hollow forms. They are layered with two glazes that react with one another in the firing process, allowing for an element of chance. As Jane notes, “they are much lighter than they look,” often shifting perceptions of weight and material, with surfaces that can appear like stone or concrete.

The floats and fenders carry a quiet familiarity across different waters. They sit just far enough from their original function to become abstract, occupying their own space.
