Lucy Mortimer
Lucy studied Studio Ceramics at Falmouth Art School in the 1990s, developing a strong interest in hand-building and smoke-firing techniques. Her work draws inspiration from the rich South West coastline, with its varied geological textures, colours and markings.
For Lucy, working with clay is a sensual, mental and physical process, rooted in the relationship between material and maker. She coils stoneware clay into open or pod-shaped vessels, which are then rhythmically formed through carving, scraping and modelling with a range of tools. There is a responsiveness to how each piece feels during the making process, allowing for an intuitive approach.
